I'm moving... sort of
May. 1st, 2009 01:21 pmFor those of you watching my LiveJournal, this probably comes as a bit of a surprise, since most of you are real-life friends and don't know about the Dreamwidth movement among the somewhat fannish community. To make a long story short, for a long time I've been pissed off about the way LiveJournal runs their business and treats their customers, but I've been reluctant to move because I didn't see a viable alternative.
Dreamwidth is a viable alternative, not just because their company is run from the perspective of customer service instead of the perspective of making money, but because it has several important features that'll let me move with the minimum amount of fuss.
1. Dreamwidth doesn't and will never have ads on their site.
2. They allow automatic cross-posting to other journaling sites.
3. They allow OpenID with a handful of icons for people commenting from other sites.
4. They allow me to subscribe to everyone on my LiveJournal and InsaneJournal watch list through OpenID, so I can keep reading the people on LJ...
5. Which allows me to consolidate what had been a two-journal reading list into one central location.
6. It also means that my InsaneJournal readers, who couldn't see my original fiction before because I was too lazy to crosspost it, can now read that.
7. It allows me to import all my journal entries and comments from LJ and IJ, so it's like I never even moved.
To my InsaneJournal readers - most of which have already moved to DreamWidth - this means that I can have one journal for fic babble, personal babble, cosplay babble, and other babble, whereas before I was maintaining two. In the long run, this is better for me.
I'll still be "posting" to both websites, because of the crossposting feature. My readers won't have to do anything, except commenting will redirect to DW now, but I don't get enough comments for it to really matter anyway.
