Wildlife day at Casa Ryle
May. 24th, 2009 08:14 pmSo, a little bit of background. About two years ago in March one of our dogs passed away of old age. Then this year, also in March, we had to put our other dog to sleep because he couldn't get up and walk anymore. They both lived to ripe old ages of 14 and 13 respectively.
We've been thinking about getting another dog for a few weeks now. My parents went down to our local no-kill shelter in Tomball to see if we could find the dog for us. We thought we'd found him in a lab/setter mix who was friendly, trainable and only a year old. Unfortunately, the people who run the no-kill shelter, and the foster family they had the dog with, are both Extra Special A+ California-brand Crazy. They were treating the adoption process much like the process for adopting a child - massive amounts of paperwork, home visits, acclimation visits, etc. Now, we love our animals, and we want our animals to be happy, but they're still animals. We are not going to go through an audition process for a dog.
Today we decided to go down to the SPCA and see if there were any dogs that struck us. I fell in love with a black-and-tan/shepherd/something mix named Matilda, but unfortunately she was really skittish around people and other dogs, so we couldn't take her, since we always try to get two dogs. We ended up adopting a hound mutt named Brodee and a border collie/lab mix that we've named Zeke. The two of them hit it off immediately, which was surprising since they're both male and neither of them are fixed yet. The SPCA requires that animals be fixed before they go home with new owners, so we scheduled their surgeries and we pick them up on Monday.
When we got home, we were eating lunch and discussing the dogs when we looked out back and there was a bird of prey sitting on the rocks near our pool. We got the camera and took about a thousand pictures of him; I'll do a pic dump tomorrow if I can get ahold of the camera. He looks like a red-tailed hawk, which are native to our area, but he still has the floofy crest that birds of prey have when they aren't fully grown. Someone started a weed whacker next door and he got startled like he was going to fly away, but he didn't get very far so we think he's injured. If he's still here tomorrow we're going to call a wildlife rescue.
In other news, I got all my fabric for Sheena and Kricketune today. I'm going to finish unpacking and then I'll start buckling down on those, since I have to have them finished by THURSDAY OH GOD. Wednesday night, really, since we're going to the con on Thursday. And I still have to style the Sheena wig and dye and style the Kricketune wig D:
If people are interested, I'll take lots of process and progress shots of these costumes, since I haven't really done that before and I think it'll be good for my portfolio to show how I work. Thoughts?
PS: Yes I did use my Houndoom icon for an article about animals ♥
